Selecciones Reader's Digest was a Spanish-language digest magazine published by the Reader's Digest Association. The magazine had offices in New York City, Barcelona, Miami, Bogota and Mexico City. It began publication in 1931 as "El Deseo", being renamed to Selecciones Reader's Digest in 1938 with its English counterpart launched that same year with the title "Reader’s Digest". The two publications shared content but operated independently until 1971 when they merged into one edition. In 1982, they were joined by a sister publication called "Menú". In 1995, the magazine was sold to Grupo México. In December 2000, their offices were raided by Raid for its corrupt practices that it employed to fill the magazine with advertisements. In June 2007, a decision was made to shut down the Spanish edition of Reader's Digest. The last issue of Selecciones Reader's Digest was published on June 30, 2007 and it ceased publication after 210 years. The last English issue however, appeared on September 28 of that same year with a reduced frequency as it merged with Menú instead. The magazine had 1,800 employees when it shut down. There are several Latin American editors who are no longer associated with Reader's Digest after the closure. These include José Luis Ortiz Madrid, who was Editor-in-Chief of the Spanish language edition until 2005. He was responsible for launching "Selecciones", one of the top periodicals in Spain. His column “Debate” has been published in Sitges, Spain for over thirty years. The magazine was published monthly, with a total of 40 issues per year. It covered topics in the fields of health, nutrition, home decorating, cooking and aging. Articles are included from "Reader's Digest" editions in English, Spanish and French.Selecciones Reader's Digest had a supplement called "Selecciones Reader's Digest Menú" ("Reader's Digest Menú"). It was launched in 1982 and was published monthly by Selecciones Reader's Digest to focus on cooking recipes. This magazine ceased publication in December 2000 when the publisher decided to focus its efforts on the parent publication instead. "Menú" has since been part of "Reader's Digest".This was a supplement published monthly and was created in 1995. This magazine featured articles on health, medicine, travel and the environment. It also included a special section for children and teenagers called “Emepe” where they could find activities and projects to do. It ceased publication in December 2000 when it merged with Selecciones Reader's Digest. This magazine had Spanish versions of columns that appeared in the English magazine such as "A Taste of Home", "Dear Abby" and "Just for Kids". cfa1e77820
